Born in Rurka Kalan (Jullundur), V. P. Hansrani came to England on 25 May 1939. He was President and also Vice-President of the India League (1962–75) and General Secretary to the Coventry branch of the Indian Workers’ Association. During his activism, Hansrani liaised with Krishna Menon and Sardar Ajit Singh, whilst also editing publications such as Azad Hind. Hansrani was involved in the war effort in Calne in Wiltshire.

With his lifelong friend and fellow activist Ujagar Singh, Hansrani moved to Coventry and worked as a pedlar. In 1949 Hansrani and Singh moved to Leicester. Later in the 1960s they set up a knitwear business called Hansrani U Singh, later renamed Hansrani & Co. Hansrani married Parkash Vati Hansrani in 1949 in India, and returning to England had two children, including Krishan Hansrani.
