Glitter Cymru
A community support group for minoritized LGBTQ+ individuals, based in Cardiff (Wales)
Location(s)
Cardiff, Wales
About
Glitter Cymru helps to provide social support for a community that has been, and continues to be, marginalized in wider society. It was set up in June 2016 as a monthly meet-up group for people who identified at the time as BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) and LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, plus). The community group was established after hearing the frustrations of the minoritized LGBTQ+ community at not feeling welcomed, understood or represented by the wider LGBTQ+ community and by society in general. Glitter Cymru was thus conceived of as a possible antidote to the issue of invisibility that many minoritized queer people continue to feel, particularly in smaller cities like Cardiff.
Now, Glitter Cymru has an established reputation in Wales as the largest LGBTQ+ group which supports Wales's minoritized LGBTQ+ community. Their core community consists of, but is not limited to, members who are asylum seekers, refugees, international students, those disabled, carers and the transgender community. Their central committee, which helps steer Glitter Cymru, is chosen from the wider global majority community and all its members have made important contributions to Wales's LGBTQ+ community. Glitter Cymru has hosted Wales’s largest annual celebration of minoritized LGBTQ+ communities, Glitter Pride.
