About

John Raghoobar, now the Mayor of Dolgellau, volunteered as a young man to support the British Army during the arrival of Ugandan Asian refugees at the Tonfanau Resettlement Camp in 1972. He later worked at the camp, helping to restore basic services and support new arrivals. He recalls the camp conditions and the camaraderie among volunteers.

This interview was conducted as part of the 'British Ugandan Asians at 50' project, led by India Overseas Trust with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project documents testimonies from residents and people who worked in the UK-based camps created for those expelled from Uganda in 1972.
