Part of the external British Ugandan Asian 50 oral history collection

About

Jatin Shah was a child when his family fled Uganda in 1972. He reflects on leaving behind a lavish life in Africa and adapting to life as a refugee, first in India and later in a UK resettlement camp. Despite living with polio, he went on to build a career in fashion design.

This interview was conducted as part of the 'British Ugandan Asians at 50' project, led by India Overseas Trust with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project documents testimonies from residents and people who worked in the UK-based camps created for those expelled from Uganda in 1972.
