South Asian Britain: Connecting Histories is a digital resource which provides information about South Asians across the four nations of the UK from 1830 to the present, the organizations they were involved in, their British connections and the major events in which they participated.

This interactive resource offers a variety of search and browsing options, including theme pages, timelines, location maps and network diagrams which demonstrate South Asian networks and connections across Britain. It includes oral history profiles with clips from interviews conducted by the project research team or reused with permission from other projects.  Some pages include extracts from archival sources and they are designed to provide information for further research in these areas.

The site is also producing learning resources for teachers, in partnership with the British Library, which will be forthcoming in 2025/2026.

Browsing and searching

Please use the Home Page to navigate the site. The search box in the top right-hand corner allows you to search the whole site with a keyword for any type of page. The advanced search page allows you to refine your search by type of page or theme.

You can browse the site through the landing pages for ‘themes’, ‘people’, ‘organizations’, ‘events’ and ‘oral histories’, using the links on the left-hand column of the main site or the home page. Please note that individuals are alphabetized by first name.

You can click through to related entries and pages through the timelines on ‘themes’ pages and through blue hyperlinks on most of the pages.

Many entries have collapsible headings. If you click on the arrows you can expand the headings to see more material around secondary sources and archive extracts.

Using the material

Please read our copyright pages for information on reuse of material and how to credit the use of any of our pages. We also have an acknowledgements page which highlights all the people who helped us put this large resource together. On some pages you will see an ‘entry credit line’ which acknowledges anyone, outside of the main project team, who helped write some of the new material added to this site from 2025 onwards.

Each page emphasizes the focus of the ‘Remaking Britain’ research project. The information is not complete and will vary in depth. Note in particular that there may be some imprecise dates.

Trigger warnings

As you navigate the resource, you may encounter histories and experiences that cause distress. These histories have been documented and shared for preservation and educational purposes, and to demonstrate the wide-ranging experiences of South Asians in Britain. Learning about these histories may trigger difficult emotional responses. Given this, we encourage you to prioritize your wellbeing by taking regular breaks from the resource’s content when necessary.
