On the oral histories landing page you will find our prroject collection, as well as a range of audio content from external collections.
For the project collection, we interviewed around thirty South Asians from many walks of life and from across the United Kingdom. Our interviewees ranged from their early 20s to mid-90s, were based in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, and hailed from different social, cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds. We have collected stories from people whose heritage spans many parts of South Asia and those who have experienced multiple migrations. We have included testimonies from those who identify as LGBTQIA+, as well as those from working-class or Caste-Oppressed communities and those whose family histories can be traced as far back as the early twentieth century.
Each interview in its entirety lasts between 2 and 5 hours and has been archived in the British Library. We have used a life narrative approach where we have asked interviewees to take us through any aspect of their lives, from early childhood to the present. These are oral history interviews: the audio recording and collection of memories and stories for historical preservation and study. On the oral history pages, you will find a profile for each interviewee where you can access clips of their interview as well as images, and sometimes video clips. The full interviews recorded for 'Remaking Britain' are available at the British Library under collection reference C2047.
As well as our own interviews, we feature interviews from existing collections, including BUA50, Hidden Heritages, Museum of Youth Culture and the British Library. You will also find a list with links to interviews elsewhere held across the UK.
Please note that all audio and video clips and their transcriptions are excluded from creative commons licensing. This material cannot be reused or published elsewhere without prior agreement. Please address any permissions requests to: remaking-britain-project@bristol.ac.uk
